Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) is a good option for people who might not want to have to remember their contraception every day . LARC will stop you from getting pregnant for a number of months or years. There are two main types of LARC that you can use:
- An Implanon device can be inserted subcutaneously in the arm to provide 3 years of contraceptive cover.
- An IUD (intrauterine device) is placed inside your uterus. There are several IUD devices containing progesterone hormone available. These include the Mirena Coil (more suitable for women who have previously had a vaginal delivery of a baby) and Kyleena and Jaydess for women who have not delivered vaginally or at all. Mirena and Kyleena offer 5 years contraceptive cover while the Jaydess offers 3 years. The Mirena Coil is also licensed separately for treatment of heavy periods and for womb protection as part of “HRT” in the treatment of menopause.
An implant or IUD can be removed when you don’t want to use it anymore.
Whilst this option may not be suitable for some women, there are some advantages in using LARCs
- Effective, low-cost contraception that lasts for a long time.
- You don’t have to remember to use contraception every day.
- Doesn’t interfere with you having sex.
- Once an IUD or implant is removed, fertility returns quickly.
- No one can see that you are using a LARC.
